This city has the world famous Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória (XIV - XVI centuries), which is a masterpiece of Portuguese Gothic, classified by UNESCO World Heritage Sites, it is a national landmark. Besides this it has the “Capela dos Fundadores, which is a very importante chapel, with its magnificent stained glass windows, cloisters, with a magnificent atrium and unfinished chapels.
Alcobaça
Alcobaça grew around an Arab castle and then around a Christian monastery: between the two, there are medieval streets with beautiful churches as the “Igreja da Misericórdia” and “Igreja da Nossa Senhora da Conceição” that reminds us of portuguese ancient history. Being the biggest church in Portugal, the Monastery of “Santa Maria de Alcobaça” has a simple and elegant medieval architecture and it was founded in 1178 by a religious order to fulfill the will made ââby the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques.
